Does Penis Size Really Matter?

It’s not uncommon to feel self-conscious about the size of your penis. But when it comes to the bedroom, does penis size really matter? Read more about the genetics behind penis size, as well as how to have sex with a small or big penis and whether size plays a role in trying to get pregnant.

What is the Average Penis Size?

Penises come in all shapes and sizes, cut and uncut. The Boston Medical Group, using data from 20 studies, found that the average penis length worldwide is 5.16 inches erect. The average erect girth is around 4.59 inches.

Now, how is that length and girth determined? Is penis size genetic? Does that bulge in your pants come from your DNA? Or does it stem from some other factor?

Is Penis Size Genetic?

Yes, penis size is genetic, but the size of your dad’s or uncle’s and your overall DNA composition are not necessarily the determinant. Other factors can also play a role in the length and girth of your member.

Your hormonal makeup can also play a role in penis size. That does not mean, however, that you have a larger penis just because your testosterone levels are higher. There is no correlation between an individual’s testosterone levels and their penis size.

When Does the Penis Start and Stop Growing?

The penis grows very gradually after birth, but the most significant period of penile growth occurs during puberty, which generally occurs between 9.5 to 14 years of age. Penis growth typically ends when a person is 18 or 19 years old, but it may not max out until an individual is in their early 20s.

Does Penis Size Matter for What Size Condom You Wear?

Your penis size directly informs the condom size you need. Standard condoms are made for average-sized penises, while larger condoms such as Trojan™ Magnum™ are about 30% larger than standard condoms. You want a condom that unrolls from the tip of the penis and reaches the base and leaves space at the tip to hold semen when you ejaculate. Wearing a condom that’s too small or loose-fitting might cause it to break or slip off.

For more information on how to know what size condom you need, refer to the Trojan™ Condom Size & Fit Guide. Consult the Trojan™ & Magnum™ Condom Size Charts for a guide to how each of our condoms measures up.

Does Penis Size Matter for Sexual Satisfaction?

Believe it or not, previous research has shown that penis size does not matter when it comes to sexual satisfaction. Or at least, not necessarily in the way you may think!

From a physiological perspective, penises of all sizes are capable of giving pleasure, helping partners reach orgasm and causing pregnancy. That said, different body types and sexual organs fit together differently. Not to mention, everyone has their personal preferences.

Technique is also a very important factor when it comes to sexual satisfaction. A person with a smaller penis might be a sexpert and know just how to use their joystick. Conversely, someone with a large penis might have poor technique and very little understanding of the importance of pace and angles.

How Does Penis Size Play a Role in the Bedroom?

Penis size has a definite impact on penetration. Persons with longer penises can penetrate deeper. However, deep penetration might feel more painful to your partner, and thus you may have to proceed with caution.

Someone with a smaller penis may not be able to penetrate as deeply, but your partner may have an easier time handling it. The average depth of a vagina is about 3.77 inches, which is below the average penis size. Moreover, if you’re trying anal penetration, your partner might prefer you not go as deep.

Whether you have a larger or smaller member, there are things you can do to make the sexual experience pleasurable and safe! Let’s look at some tips for having sex with a smaller or bigger penis size.

How to Have Sex with a Small Penis

If you have a “small” penis, or less than the average length and girth, there are things you can do to help stimulate your partner, starting with certain sex positions.

If your partner prefers deeper penetration, you’ll want to choose positions that allow you to go a bit deeper. This applies to certain standing sex positions, especially variations of doggy style. If your penis is thinner, try a position that feels like a tighter squeeze, like missionary with closed legs. Plus, do not forget about oral stimulation, which you can do as part of foreplay or in between moments of penetration. If your partner has a vagina, make sure you’re addressing the clitoris, whether with your tongue or fingers.

You should consider incorporating sex toys, too! The Trojan™ Tandem™ Couples Vibrating Ring, for example, is designed to stimulate both partners simultaneously, so you can both benefit from toy action. Playing around with sex toys might help you find the G-Spot or P-Spot for a more pleasurable and mutually satisfying experience.

How to Have Sex with a Large Penis

Don’t let bravado overtake you: just because you have a large penis does not guarantee your partner a better experience. You still need to know how to use it, which will require some give and take and communication. In fact, more of the focus should be on your partner!

Your ample size really won’t matter at all if your partner doesn’t feel aroused and prepared to take your member. Try some foreplay and be intentional with it, rather than rushing to oral and penetration.

Giving oral may also be a good way to get your partner warmed up to take all of you! If your partner isn’t prepared, the sex might be painful, which isn’t the experience anyone wants. Stimulate the vagina or try rimming to get your partner all hot and bothered and ready for penetration.

Using lube will help add comfort and pleasure while lessening friction. Some lubes, like Trojan™ Arouses & Intensifies, introduce added sensations of warming, cooling or tingling. Not to mention, lube can also help you try out different sex positions that may otherwise prove difficult to get the right fit.

Speaking of positions, some are likely to feel better for your partner than others. Allowing your partner to get on top gives them the opportunity to control the depth of penetration, as well as the pace. If you’re controlling the tempo, make sure to communicate with your partner to ensure they’re feeling closer to the Big-O and not something more like “oh no”!

Lastly, if you’re well-endowed and having trouble finding protection, try a Magnum™ condom. If you’re unsure about whether you can fit a Magnum™, look at the size charts or read more about it in depth.

Does Penis Size Matter When Trying to Get Pregnant?

Penis size does not have any correlation to male fertility and thus has no impact on the process of getting pregnant.

All About Size? Hardly!

Relatively speaking, penis size is but a small piece of the sex pie when it comes to sex life. Knowing your partner’s likes and dislikes is imperative. Stamina and lasting longer can also maximize the experience.

So, if you’re worried about size: don’t be! Your penis size is but a small fraction of sex life.
